It never occurred to me before, but the Beatles seem to be echoing the great Judy Garland:
Clang, clang, clang went the trolley
Ding, ding, ding went the bell
Zing, zing, zing went my heartstrings
From the moment I saw him I fell

Shouldn't this be, "and I held her hand in mi-eeeeen (wild pubescent female shrieking)"? At least that's the way I always hear these words.

You're right of course, rolig stone. The lyrics were written first. When the tune was composed it ended up with more music than words. With no more words available, this was the singer's creative solution.

bilby commented on the word my heart went zoom
Climbin' up on Salisibury Hill
I could see the city light
Wind was blowin', time stood still
Eagle flew out of the night
He was something to observe
Came in close, I heard a voice
Standing, stretching every nerve
Had to listen, had no choice
I did not believe the information
Just had to trust imagination
My heart goin' boom boom boom
"Son," he said, "grab your things
I've come to take you home."
- Peter Gabriel, Salisbury Hill.
